January Concert Schedule

Season tickets for the CAMERATA OSSLA at 600 pesos include admission to the special Haas Mansion event, where seating is limited to just 200. Individual admission to that concert, if available, will cost 200 pesos, while individual tickets to the others cost 150 pesos. They are now on sale at the Angela Peralta Theater box office and at the offices of CULTURA, the Municipal Institute of Culture, Tourism and Art on Aleman near the corner of Belisario Dominguez.

*  January 15 — All W.I. Mozart: La Funta Jardinera Overture, Divertimento in D major, Adagio and Fugue in C minor, Symphony no. 29 in A major

*  January 22 — All J.S. Bach: Brandenburg Concertos nos. 3 in G major, no. 2 in F major, No. 6 in B-flat major and No. 4 in G major

*  Jan. 29 — Special Beethoven-Brahms concert (available by subscription only) by a trio made up of Gordon Campbell on French horn, Roman Revueltas (soloist of the National Symphony Orchestra)l on violin and Joel Juan Qui, brilliant Culiacan-born pianist, played at the limited-capacity Haas Mansion on Heriberto Frias, one block from the Plazuela Machado.

*  Feb. 5 — Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: Spring in E minor, Summer in G minor, Autumn in F major and Winter in F minor (Nathaniel Basa, violin soloist) plus a fitting series closer: F.J. Haydn’s “Farewell Symphony no. 45 in F sharp minor

 

1st Annual Holiday Light Throwdown!

Las Lagunitas is proud to announce the first annual Holiday Light Throw Down. The contest is open to all EDM residents. Winners will be announced on Christmas Eve. 

• Entry Fee is $100 pesos* – Winner takes 50% of the pool, 2nd place 30% and 3rd place 20%. Honorable Mentions will get a certificate of participation. See below for “amateur” rules.
• Winners will be determined by a juried panel of three judges. So far, we have two judges, Claire Silk & Lisa Pratt (although she is as yet unaware of the fact). Anyone else who is willing to judge, please contact krisvadale@aol.com ASAP.
• Judging will be based on a numeric scorecard. Each entry will be scored secretly on each of five different categories.  Total points will determine the winners.
• Categories are:

1. Suitability – Does the presentation reflect the “true meaning” of the Holidays?
2. Originality  & Creativity – Presentations must be unique and creative.
3. Sensitivity – Does the presentation offend the neighbors? Will it keep them awake?
4. Environmental Friendliness – Is the presentation “green”? …meaning, is the carbon footprint of the presentation worth it?
5. Overall Aesthetics – Is the presentation pleasing to the eye and inviting? Would YOU like to spend your holiday sitting amongst or walking through the decorations?

• Judging will take place on the evening of December 23rd at 7 pm. A Peanut Gallery is encouraged. Competitive presentations are allowed to offer culinary “incentives” to the judges and the gallery. Results will be kept secret until the following afternoon.

If you would like to participate at the “amateur” level (i.e. “for free”), we will waive the entry fee and you can participate only in the moveable party part. You will not, of course receive anything but an Honorable mention.

Feb 12 – Coronation of the Floral Queen at the baseball stadium, 7:30 pm  $100 – $500 pesos

F eb 13 – Coronation of the Carnaval Queen at the baseball stadium, 6:30 pm $100 – $500 pesos; Burning of Bad Humor in front of Hotel Freeman, 9 pm, free; Combate Naval, Olas Altas Bay, 11pm.

Feb 14 – First Carnaval Parade southbound along the Malecon, 4 PM

Feb 15 – Coronation of the Child Queen at the baseball stadium, 6:30 pm $150 – 950 pesos; Carnaval Fireworks off the Fisherman’s Monument, 9pm.

Feb 16 – Second Carnaval Parade, southbound along the malecon, 3 pm

Feb 20, 21 – Surfing Competition, 8 am Las Brujas Beach.

Thursdays and Saturdays – Bi-lingual walking tours of El Centro, led by locals. 10 am – 1 pm, $10 USD

Carnaval Comes to Town

The annual Mazatlan Carnaval begins soon, culminating in the Feb 13th Fireworks display. Be sure to plan your shopping expeditions around the road closures and parade routes!
